@damianwalsh Hah that's a good point about demos. I was thinking of v1 to v2, but what you're saying is more like v0.1 to v1. 😄 There are some rare demos I like more than the final product, but you do get to hear an obvious improvement, so yeah understandably, sometimes the demos just aren't good to listen to, but as you say, record labels will happily get a new release out if the fans will buy it haha

@chriskirknielsen Versioning is a nice framing. It’s not so much demos are better but that they open a window onto a song’s development. The Beatles Esher demos are a good example. There are several takes of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, where you hear the progression from a basic sketch as instruments are added and the arrangement changes before the final version. Fascinating, at least to me. I wonder if, as more stuff gets generated, artists might share demos as a kind of ‘proof of life’.
