About the only exchange rate that has held constant over the centuries has been the Head/Acre/Au exchange, with 1 acre arable land = 1 head of cattle = 1ozt gold.

I really hate when people act like things should be valued in ounces of gold when the supply versus the population makes this a meaningless comparison "in 1920 you could buy ~170 loaves of bread for a ounce of gold. Today, you can buy 500-600 loaves of bread for that same ounce! Bread is now 2 to 3 factors cheaper!" would make about as much sense fiat money inflates - that tells you nothing more than that you shouldn't hold stacks of paper cash without getting interest
