@sundew "All the popular LLMs are operated by commercial companies who want to make money. The two main ways in which they make money are subscription payments from people who want to ask an unlimited number of questions and investments from very rich people who hope that the company will get more subscribers and their investment will grow. So they want people to ask more questions and saying 'I don't know' doesn't encourage that." Unlike LLMs, I readily admit that I might be wrong.

    @aharoni Interesting - an incentives approach. I was somewhat expecting something like: "LLMs are trained on large amounts of text, and then given a prompt to complete in a way that's similar to the training text. The training text will rarely be people having answered 'I don't know', so LLMs tend not to output that either".
