irregular reminder that toothpaste shouldn't burn your mouth at all, and if it does you should try one that either isn't mint flavoured or doesn't use SLS as a detergent (or both) edit: see this post for my current recommendation

it really was so weird that first time I brushed without it burning, suddenly realising that it was possible to brush without racing the clock and that I could in fact take my time to ensure everything was actually clean

update: my current toothpaste is Sensodyne ProNamel Gentle Whitening Advanced Plus (yes, that whole thing), which sits at the intersection of: no mint / mentholno SLSno microplastics ("acrylates"/"copolymer" etc) so far it's the best widely-available toothpaste I've used — i.e. I can brush "until I'm done" instead of "until the burning sets in", and I can buy it from pretty much anywhere. be aware that the Sensodyne brand includes a lot of variations, most of which fail one or more of these criteria.

@tully My burning is mint-related and the selection here in my small town is just ALL FUCKING MINT. :YellsAtCloud: Thankfully online pharmacies exist and I can order a non-mint (and non-foaming) one that doesn't make my mouth hurt.

@tully I'm firmly in the anti-mint/anti-SLS camp. I use some random fruity kids' toothpaste because it's chalky rather than a gel, which is a sensory nightmare in its own way. I'd also like to point out that, since I've stopped using toothpaste with SLS, I've also almost entirely stopped getting canker sores. I've also tested this out with others who used to get them a lot - no foam, less sores, hooray!

  • @tully remind me of people who find orange juice spicy and turn out they are mildly allergic to it

@tully yeah, my kiddo has this and finding SLS free toothpaste that is NOT mint is so hard! Right now he uses a gel strawberry kids toothpaste that has a small amount of SLS and he uses less toothpaste on the brush. So far that's worked but it's so frustrating!
