i always think the original "what, if anything, is a ___" fills in the blank with "bat", but no, i'm mixing up nagel (1974)'s "what is it like to be a bat?" with gould (1983)'s "what, if anything, is a zebra?" except today i realized (by reading the first paragraph of the latter) that *that* paper is a reference to wood (1957)'s "what, if anything, is a rabbit?"
