I’m actually not using a custard base at all. Just fresh cream/milk straight from the fridge plus the flavorings and sugar. So it’s pretty much already cold.

If you're keeping the sugar and fat ratios right it should be ok. Maybe it is a volume thing after all. I do hope you can work it out, it looks delicious on the recipe page.
