Building my own MOD player (for giggles, also because I've never really written any audio code at all, and this seems like a good way to learn) and reading this TXT file I found called FMODDOC.TXT which was last updated 17/11/1995, and describes how this guy's MOD player from 1995 works and... wait... ■ MOD Player Tutorial by FireLight ■ This FMOD here is the progenitor of the famous fmod game audio engine that everybody uses today? That's so cool!
