@jakalopes@mas.to I’m not a scientist. I’m an old person. Retired. Take it from me: do the hard thing. If it means going to another country for an extended time, do it while you are still young enough to deal with the turmoil of moving, new job and having to form new connections in another country. Look on it as a way to grow more and enrich your life. I read a book that said feel the fear and do it anyway. William Shatner said his success comes from saying yes to everything. Good luck to you!

@jakalopes@mas.to The US is in a bad phase for sure. There's lots of other countries where good (or better) research is done though! So yeah I don't know what your current status is but if you want to do fundamental research I'd say your best bet is "not the US" (at least at the moment)
