I've made it with both high alcohol concentration (everclear) and regular strength vodka - in my opinion there's no difference. There's also no difference after 3 months. I've tasted at 30/60/90 days and 3/6/9 months (many times, many different beans, different alcohols). 90 days is the sweet spot, beyond that it's no more complex, no stronger vanilla flavor. I'm sure someone's going to disagree - this is my opinion based on about 15 years of on-going vanilla making/testing.
