Why doesn't Markdown work when posting on the Mastodon web site?

@passthejoe@ruby.social Vanilla Mastodon doesn't accept Markdown input, but it will display Markdown in posts from other fediverse software that does. https://fedi.tips/is-mastodon-compatible-with-rich-text-formatting-such-as-markdown/
