@mcnutt you're making me think more about this again. The thing is, vis is different than most fields, especially in it's interdisciplinary nature. In practice, it's about communicating things...usually to people who don't already know them deeply. And that, in itself, is incredibly challenging. Why do we need to exist, as vis experts? Why doesn't an 'expert' in a subject just 'make charts'? Umm...have you seen the average 'charts' in any scientific research paper or poster?
