sometimes i think we need some more "grand challenges" type north starring, other times i think we need to change the name of the field (so that we aren't as focused on pictures). a throughline from the VDS disco was that maybe we should go work with other people in their home venues also feels salient, but also raises a question: why is vis itself a field? if we're support should we not just go do support where it's needed?

obviously there's no one answer to these or related anxieties, but it was honestly a little cathartic to hear people voicing some woes related to these

@mcnutt I highly recommend Li Vigni 2020 on "The failed institutionalization of 'complexity science'" for a long-form answer to this question. My takeaway is that despite the inherent contradictions of a 'science of interdisciplinarity', the load-bearing institutions in the visualization field right now seem far more diverse and international, by comparison. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0073275320938295
