@meganL wow a blast from the past - no idea this was still about, to the extent I had forgotten it existed! I broadly need to get hold of very early Gen X/younger boomers so this is a good shout.

@leymoo I don't program, much less hack, but I worked in a comic book shop that carried 'zines. I remember 2600 did talk about phone phreaking so I would imagine they also have folks who know about that phone system and might be able to figure out what it was and what the "fix" WAS.
