@tiggy@mastodonapp.uk I can trace it back to early 1800s collections of the sermons of John Wesley. But Wesley provides no clue for how to go back further. Certainly there's no route to #Socrates from Wesley. And the the words of the Epistle of James that Wesley is explaining do not involve the formula. #JohnWesley
