Encarta was an intermediate step of traditional encyclopedias going out of favor, and I love Wikipedia, but we lost a bit of culture when wikipedia effectively became the only show in town.

@toolbear couldn't agree more about wikipedia. i think some aspects of encarta were a step towards something more engaging - they worked really, really hard to make the hyperlinking system feel like a world worth exploring.
