Yet another experience that is much further from universal than I ever thought. The short of it is Rossum's Universal Robots, a play by Karel Čapek, introduced the word robot to science fiction, and especially (with the popularity of its translation) to English. I used to have a book that had the full text in my personal library. (We won't go into why that's past tense.) That's basically it for purposes of this.
