@ItsePerkele @seanking @IzzyOnDroid Statistically, that's most users. I had to deal with this, a phone had at least a dozen basic-utility-looking apps that were ad/ notification spam delivery fronts. All from the Play Store, of course, because that's very safe and secure. The user in this instance was about to discard the "broken" phone and buy a new one before I stepped in. 1/2 because mastodon is dumb

  • @ItsePerkele @seanking @IzzyOnDroid This is a real problem, but Google is twisting it to harvest even more data while not addressing it at all, and no one in (political) power is doing anything to call out this bullshit. 2/2 why are we doing this crap in 2026

@landelare please don't get me started on that topic, or we won't get much sleep tonight… They want to control safety for the world, but cannot even keep their own house clean. And having their "Safe" browsing block innocent sites because of false positives, while keeping their own sites out of their scanners reach (or storage.googleapis.com would have long been gone)… 🤐

  • @landelare @seanking @IzzyOnDroid I'd be willing to bet that most of the problems come not from non-Play Store sources but from apps that are registered "legitimately" on Play Store, downloaded from Play Store, maybe even stamped with the "ok" from Play Protect. This developer/app registration is going to do absolutely nothing to help with that. And thats rather obvious. Which makes it even more infuriating that the average user is so dumb these days, that they'll just take Googles word for it. I wonder if life is too easy these days. You just press a button and whatever you want appears/happens. And that has made everyone dumb as a boot.
