I wonder if these academics took a step back for a moment at what they have written, & wondered whether it might come across as sociopathic and patronising. I guess not. The UK deer argument is facile btw. We cull deer in this country because they have no real predators now, so their numbers have to be managed. It's a bit different to killing a Lion or other endangered apex predator.
