@Ralph A cutting mat protects the underlying work surface while cutting various material (paper, fabric, foam, ...) with a sharp blade (utility knife, rotary cutter ...). Usually they're marked with a measured grid, and often also a variety of angles to help make precise cuts with the assistance of a straightedge. They often have a "self-healing" surface that won't be scarred by the cutting blades ... and thank you for the reminder to look that bit up, as I don't know how self-healing works.
