@derthomas start with the toggle switch, you're clean right now. Crunch is distortion, brown is moooar disto (Van Halen inspired tone).
For the bass/middle/treble you should experiment, put everything at noon and explore to see what you (well, your son) like. I tend to think that you shouldn't deviate too much from noon (9 to 3) to have something that works with everything, but sometimes it's interesting to push one or another to an extreme, depending on what's your intent (typically less bass/more treble might sound brighter, the contrary would sound muddier).
It's good to experiment, try things, and make mistakes. Best way to learn and to find your sound.
