Now use masking tape to protect the clay from the epoxy. It's possible to wipe off epoxy if you don't mask and smear some in the wrong places but you'll never get all of it and you don't want to mess with this toxic stuff any more than necessary.

Fill the hole about 3/4 of the way with epoxy and also put some epoxy down into the pipe so that it gets under the little tabs you folded down. I'm using paste epoxy these days because I need it for some other projects, but when I started I used liquid. I actually prefer the liquid because it's easier to control. If you're using liquid you should tape the top to the pipe so that it's nice and even. Tie some string around the other end of the cane and hang it so that the top end is down and it's hanging perfectly straight. Mix the liquid epoxy and drip it into the hole with a disposable squeezie thing.
