Each distraction a misdirection from a deeper and more consequential hidden truth, scaling upward and downward just far enough beyond what rationality allows, the sensible public and their remaining upright leadership finding their last opportunity for denial being that of being on the losing end of a pursuit curve. We find, too late, that while we have spent our energy persuading ourselves that these things are highly improbable, the conspiracists have been broadening their minds to the possible. 3/3
