@lake ugh yes do not repackage messages of dissent for the rich art world!
I grew up adjacent to the formal gallery world, since my parents do art jewelry. now I see a strong undercurrent of aspiration towards that world from my mom, as a marker of having "made it." but I'm so much more interested in the art that happens in other spaces, art for the people by the people.
don't feel like I do enough of my own art to have an idea about how I reconcile the two, but it's def fertile ground! 💜

@bouncinglime oh that’s an interesting way to grow up around art world! I grew up going to art museums, galleries, etc, but never looked overly critically at it as a system until later. It’s so tempting to give in to chasing institutional approval as validation. but who are we seeking approval from, really? The biggest pocketbooks? why do we want that? I am not even 100% against it, parts of me still love art world, but it is hard to reconcile my politics with it
