@AmyZenunim it's not shit advice. if you've never drawn in your life, you need to learn to control your instrument (pencil, pen) before you can even effectively trace or copy or whatever to start learning the target style. I can't speak for your personal example, but with drawing it is so. It's like when you need to learn what variables and loops are to understand algorithmic thinking and then programming. It's not gatekeeping. The commenter is not telling OP to start taking some 3 year life drawing course. you need some vocabulary to attempt to speak, to borrow another analogy.

@drakonic meeting someone's enthusiasm by denigrating their muse and telling them to do boring and thankless stuff first is absolutely shit advice. there will always be time to go back later and learn the fundamentals when you have any sort of confidence to stick through the hard/uncomfortable parts.

@drakonic @AmyZenunim for me at least, I'd always advocate for doing it shittily first, before expending effort on learning the craft. In my personal experience, when I promise myself to practice before doing what I actually wanna do, I end up just not doing either the fun thing or the diligent thing. Doing it badly runs the risk of making you feel bad, but I think that is something an artist has to accept going in, to feel those feelings, and to continue regardless, for the muse, for the passion, for the rabid need to bring pen to paper.
