At the time, Mexico was struggling after having just won its independence from Spain. Mexico tried to boost its recovery by renting land to USA settlers. Then the USA refused to free their slaves or leave and created Texas instead. The USA used that to further invade the still recovering Mexico and forced them at gunpoint to sell 55% of their land at a discount.
These events were still in living memory when presidents like Trump and Biden were born.
It really wasn’t that long ago.

There’s way more going on here than fits in my 500 character toot, but these are the parts that stood out to me as I relearned about this stuff. Just dire shit.
