@snowyfox I got lucky - incredibly lucky. I qualified for dual citizenship in an EU country under jus sanguinis, and the total cost to activate that citizenship ended up about $1000. Even this is more than many people can afford - and, again, this was incredibly lucky, a combination of accident of birth and really doing my homework, desperation to find a way. A friend of mine I know can also qualify under jus sanguinis, for her own country of ancestry, but it would cost about $3000, and this is more than she feels she can afford. As a former department chair at a university in the United States, I was tangentially involved in the visa and citizenship process for those I worked with. Easily over $15k - and this was long before Trump started jacking up the prices. In many cases, as you point out, dual citizenship or "golden visas" in countries, even those welcoming, cost north of $100k. The reason they have this value is because of a cruel question. What is the value of a human life? Borders are killing people. People kill for them, and people are killed by them. And it's well past time we start acknowledging that.
