I have a Steam Deck. It basically always runs Steam. I like it. I don't always run Steam on my PC though, and to make the best use of the Steam Controller (2), you must have Steam running. Steam Input is what does the heavy lifting of getting the controller to emulate a mouse, but only at the right time, and be used for an on-screen keyboard at other times, and finally be used for specific purposes in-game (area mapping, etc). Things like Gyro and its various mappings, almost all of which are quite subtle, require Steam to work correctly. The FLOSS community needs at least a minimal level of Steam Input to make this controller viable without Steam. I hope Valve will implement it, and failing that, I hope the Open Gaming Collective will do something about it in a similar way to how non-SteamOS distros use handheld daemon for things like power control.
