Some people make the argument that while Australians per-capita have a huge climate impact through carbon use, the total amount is low (because Australia has so few people in it), and therefore we should continue to burn fossil fuels. There are some adjacent excuses but they all fit in this sort of "why would you bother" / "if it ain't broke don't fix it" bucket. Tell 'em about cars in Cuba. Cuba has immaculately maintained classic cars. It is legitimately cool and is a part of Cuba's heritage and culture. It's also an anachronism. Frankly if you don't want Australia to be an anachronism, our energy mix has to evolve, or else everything is going to be electric and we're going to have a weird local market which is basically worthless overseas. Some people are OK with being anachronistic, but the rotary dials on phones are a lot less adorable when everyone else is walking around with mobile phones. Move forward or get left behind.
