Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen NMIXX – Crescendo. I’ve played this a number of times and am still enjoying the quality and arrangement of the vocals and the delightful quirkiness provided by the pauses and instrumental. Oddly enough, I don’t hear a big crescendo here. I don’t know enough about western pop to understand where NMIXX fit into the larger pop music landscape, but I do think JYP deserve credit for neither sticking rigidly to the group’s initial sound nor then having them conform to whatever happened to be the girl group style of the moment but instead allowing the group’s distinctive artistic identity to evolve.
