@silhelm It may be worth getting someone to do your BP manually with a manual sphygmomanometer.
If you know your usual likely BP range, your manual tester (dunno if you can do your own, not sure) can stop pumping the higher inflation and start listening for the top number or inflate then listen carefully...
The electronic machines will tighten much more than needed (and tighten harder if they miss a reading).

@NatalyaD thanks. Not an option, but I'll try a wrist version and see if that's more comfortable. And yea, it tightens to 190 which hey you don't need to do that.
