Microsoft will enforce software IP until the bitter end. Here's their recent archival release of Tim Paterson's DOS: "[it] targets Seattle Computer Products' ASM assembler, so you will need a copy. It can be obtained from any release of 86-DOS or MS-DOS by Seattle Computer Products." Hyperlinking to this could be dangerous.
