Dug around and found some history on io.com. io.com was an offshoot of Steve Jackson Games, and they got into the online scene when BBSs were all the rage, transitioning to the Internet over time. I think I got my io.com address in 1994 or 1995, and kept it active for probably a dozen years after that. I got my well.com address after moving to Santa Cruz in the late 90s. Gotta have a Bay Area email address if you're living in Norcal...
