@sense @iamkonstantin The distro-independent formats I know about are Flatpak, Snap and AppImage. I have no popularity stats, just personal preferences.
AppImage has no update mechanism, which is a dealbreaker for me. Snap feels kinda bloated and clunky to me. It's also very much a Canonical technology, for better or worse. I feel like Flathub has a lot of officially supported GNOME apps. Some dependencies are deduplicated (e.g. Gtk/Qt) to optimize space/network usage.

@superblox @iamkonstantin thanks for the overview. I‘d agree with your priorities, so I’ll have a look out for Flatpak distributions — and maybe my next server will be running Debian again 🙌
