@tpaau17db @gael not really, they gave Android for free to phone manufacturers to ensure they own this market, actually killing alternatives. They invented nothing and just bought the market. We would have Maemo and/or FirefoxOS on our phones without Google monopoly, so no, we don't need them.

    @matthieu @tpaau17db @gael Nokia killed Maemo for internal reasons before Android owned the market. PalmSource failed to deliver PalmLinux for internal reasons that had nothing to do with Android. Canonical and Samsung both failed to produce compelling competitive products. Mobile device OSes are expensive to produce and even other companies with deep pockets failed to produce competitive products.

    @matthieu @gael It might be that Google's intentions behind making the source code of Android available aren't entirely genuine. However, stating "We don't need Google" when your product depends on Google's code, patches, and security fixes is hypocritical. It's also not true that Google hasn't contributed anything significant to Android as you claim.
