Gasoline has been using ethanol as an octane booster for like 20 years now. The reason for it is not THAT dumb, the issue is that the government needs to keep corn farmers in business because in an SHTF scenario, they need enough corn to keep everyone fed. They used to just write everyone a check based on how much corn they grow, but this lead to corn being dumped on the market under-price. Lot of problems came from this, including corn syrup making everyone sick. So they decided instead of paying corn farmers they'd buy the corn, make ethanol, and add it to gasoline. If ever the corn was needed, they'd just switch back to ethanol free gas. Ethanol also has the benefit of being a very non-toxic octane booster. MTBE poisons water, lead makes boomers... The problem with E-gas is that ethanol is corrosive to certain rubbers, and old fuel systems had some of those rubbers. Since it was like 2006 when they started adding it, anything newer than 2010 should be safe with ethanol gas unless the engineers that designed it are retarded...
