I always felt people who were uptight about this kind of thing were born in cities and came to hiking later in life and now think they own the sport. I grew up walking in the woods. We never called it hiking. We wore jeans because walking in the woods wasn't some special occasion to dress up for. It was super funny to me the first time some guy who thought he was an expert at hiking because he was in his college hiking club told me I shouldn't hike in jeans. I've been doing this longer than you, I'll wear what I want.
