@deathkitten Making it detachable doesn't sound like it would be any more difficult than attaching it permanently, so I'd say do that. If you were to permanently affix something, I'd make it some kind of mounting system that you can then swap different aesthetic covers to. The real masks were probably leather with holes to allow air in. Depending on how realistic you want it to look and how much effort you wanted to put into it, you could probably get away with using a felt cone.
