I was wondering if the 6 black gears at the cube faces/octahedron vertices could be replaced by 8 gears at the cube vertices/octahedron faces. I think it should work since each "mesh" again consists of an even number of gears: 6 instead of the current 8.
6 of the 12 edges would then rotate in the opposite direction.

@hcschuetz Yes, 8 gears at the corners of the cube should also work. But it wouldn't change the way the edges rotate. You'd still have an even length path of gears from every edge to every other edge.
