It's not as bad as you think, except for once scene where they have him kill a dog, which is not in the book (because they HAD to do something to remind the audience he was 'le evil'). The borat-esque scenes where he goes around meeting real people irl are extremely wholesome, and apparently gave the actor PTSD, because everyone fucking loved him (not supposed to happen)

In the movie, this act of cartoon villany ends up being what comes back to bite him in the ass, in the book it's social media jannies who orchestrate his fall for wrong think since he does literally nothing wrong throughout the entire story.
