@danluu This does remind me of a couple tangential things: 1.) The state of our apartment elevators; 2.) This person I know who found out that, despite yearly smoke detector inspections, apparently they didn't even have a smoke detector in their specific apartment for 2.5-3.5 years (Found out after a particularly burnt breakfast and they were wondering why the smoke detector didn't go off. Since been fixed.) 3.) The fact that an outlet in my apartment has a "DO NOT USE - Use = Death and possibly a fire" sign taped up above an outlet (I *think* that outlet's been fixed with the most recent electrical work in the building? Haven't checked.).
