I think running CAT as a network service a good idea. It allows auxiliary programs (such as logging) to access the rig's state while another (main) program changes it.
Fldigi offers flrig to do that, Hamlib offers rigctld. Flrig has a GUI, rigctld is "purer".
You can use flrig's network offerings from Hamlib-based programs. But some users of Hamlib-based JS8Call had weird problems when doing that.
If you can live without the GUI, I recommend rigctld, which fldigi also talks to happily.
