so when i told mami i wanted to be a fashion designer and sew clothes; because i loved drawing things i wanted, then working with her hacking, cutting, altering the clothes she made us,

she wasn't mad at me. it was more like she went into a state of panic that i had never seen her before. i had never seen mami so afraid for me.
she was an incredibly gregarious woman and i grew up with an incredible amount of liberty for a girl, especially a boricua one…

so when i told her that, one of the first things i remember her saying was, “but nena, sewing only got me into a sweatshop and that job i had at Digital. you know what “THAT JOB AT DIGITAL” was? when my mother decided she had enough of gringolandia, she packed her bags and her kids and we went to live with my Nana in San Germán. and in that town was the largest (and only) Western Digital plant in the Caribbean. my mother used to build motherboards for computers & radio systems for planes…
