We are very much back to lick-boot academia in a lot of disciplines, usually around the people who are able to generate substantial funding because PhD grants and loans are so expensive. Perception of Risk Communication gets a fortune in psych research funded by Petro-Chem though various slush funds to the extent it's like a money laundering operation - but you can get your free ride if you wag the dog's tail for it.

@Printdevil @Taskerland @devilsjunkshop It you are publishing linguistics papers about Asian languages, you have to decide whether you're going to say that the other native Chinese languages are mere dialects of Mandarin or not. One option gets you publication in China, the other is honest. This is not a post about vaccine research.
