while I was getting seated and unpacking my laptop, the person across the aisle from me was playing some game on her phone, and making all sorts of noise with it.
there were lots of hushed uncomfortable noises from the surrounding passengers, but nobody chose to confront her about it.
given that it was rather suspiciously happening at maximum volume, I leaned over to ask if she'd mind turning it down.
no response. hypothesis confirmed: she's deaf!
all it took was getting in line-of-sight and making a gesture toward her phone then my ears.
