This!
I didn't get into programming via computer science. In school I studied....
POETRY!
Thar's right. My undergrad thesis was a chapbook of minimalist poems.
The draw to programming for me was the thought that you could express an idea succinctly in a super concentrated form of language and witness it come to life.
Writing poetry isn't sooo different. I mean, it is, but the base ideas are still there, just in a different form.
The effect you're creating with language is more to play on people's emotion, their memories, and their assumptions, and there are a lot of cool tricks you can use to do this.
I remember one of my professors tell us in class that a good poem DOES something. It makes you move. It makes you experience something.
It's like a little play captured in a music box. You wind it up, set the stage, set the mood, and script certain elements into life, and you slowly dictate their movements and transformation through the poem.
The beautiful thing about it is that everyone receives it differently! I.e. its non deterministic, on purpose! But if you want to make the effect of your writing more predictable, or more universal, you need to understand how people think, how they feel, and how they receive language. You need to read the docs! Only the docs are living breathing experiences. It's your life.
To claim that computer programming has nothing to do with expression, artistry, people, or anything other than I/O is nonsense.
