Today in Fun With Symbolism; it's autumn ginko leaves, but they look like the yellow joss papers (?) thrown around at funerals, underscoring that the character is walking towards his execution. A Western equivalent would be extremely dark and soggy fall leaves or smoldering soot flakes.
