On this day, in 1536 – Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, had the book thrown at her. She was arrested and imprisoned on charges of adultery, incest, treason and witchcraft.
From a writer’s perspective I believe most commentators have missed one important fact. Recently historians were said to have found a hidden detail in one of her portraits which was a rebuttal of the charges of witchcraft. This centres on the allegation that she’d been polydactylic (from Greek polys, many, and daktylos, finger), meaning having an extra digit, implying she was involved in witchcraft.
All in all though, it’s probably worth mentioning how unlikely it was that Henry would have married her in the first place if she’d really been in possession of a superfluous pinkie… Bleedin’ obvious when you think about it!
