@piku@blahaj.zone the problem is that apparently the indian government mandates that one (which affects what the default settings are)
and then computers didn't make it easy for users to customize this to their own liking (and possibly school systems don't like it when people do this either?)

@r@glauca.space on indic keyboard layouts, https://gitlab.com/indicproject/indic-keyboard indic.app supports quite a few and seems like a decent list of layouts
