@millihertz@oldbytes.space tbf that's a 16yr old post? Things were definitely quite elitist back then for sure, but this landscape has changed a fair bit especially in the last 3-4yrs with the influx of new users coming over to alternative OS's. Not saying these neckbeards aren't still out there though

@millihertz@oldbytes.space I try to pay it forward and answer questions where I want to ask questions. Several times on IRC I helped a few people and didn’t have any luck. I’ve seen better answers on the fediverse, though some questions require domain expertise. Mixed used to be common. The were many distros that were 32bit and could take a 64bit kernel. I believe some for a while required this split. Now multiarch, containers, chroot, and emulation are used. I’m sad I cannot answer better yet.

"Why do you want this?" "That is not relevant to answering this simple question." "Your worries are overblown. [posts pile of irrelevant stats]" "This is also not an answer to the simple question asked." "I, who do not have your use case or concerns, do not have whatever problem has prompted this question." "That's nice; I'm happy for you." Once upon a time I engaged in some subtle passive-aggressive entertainment on Stack Overflow by making charitable assumptions and directly answering beginner questions that the neckbeards batted away either with demands for needless MWEs, second-guessing the questions, or otherwise typing something gratuitously demeaning when they should have just moved on. Basically, I was constantly demonstrating that answering a question that was imperfectly asked was faster and easier than whatever smug and officious waste of effort they regularly shat out. At some point I decided that providing free content for SO was not a good use of my time and economic power, especially when they decided to violate everyone's consent and use the site to train AI.

@millihertz@oldbytes.space The last time I looked at it, Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine still used 32 bit pointers due to the memory load of switching to 64 bit. On 64bit hardware it uses base+offset, both 32bit. So yes, those commenters are indeed all ignoranuses. (Yes, I spelled that correctly, an ignoraNus is someone who is both ignorant and an arsehole about it) :neocat_laugh:
