I cut my teeth on the Windows version of Kid Pix Studio Deluxe and its silly icon with the smiling face. It wasn't until all these years later that it dawned on me that the icon was a slight corruption on a good document-based app icon as outlined by the HIG. That not only makes it likely my first exposure to Mac icon design, but perhaps one of very few examples of the HIG defining an entire brand identity. Broderbund had to ship a Mac icon on Windows because they made the document the mascot!
